just a quick one to let y'all know, in line with my civic duty, all the places that the bwoi can be found and therefore avoided (for the betterment of your health) during the month of june...

busy at the start of the month, with two seperate gigs on the same day, and then it kinda chills in the middle of the month before ending on a high with foxton locks festival... which i am really looking forward to

so its all there for you to digest, in both widget and text formats...and should you decide to shun government advice and come join the bwoi for some thang shakery... well it would be damn lovely to see you!!

word up you crazy cats!! how's it all goin'?!

took to the stage with the most-excellent wildfire sessions crew on friday night... twas at the tollemache arms in harrington... which has got itself some tight old roads, some beautiful vistas, and a complete lack of mobile reception - a bit of a hitch when you have decided to navigate via the magic of google maps...

but i found it! and it was a lot of fun...

there was two stevies, who both put in sterling performances... an excellent set from abbie hutt, who i first saw over at nbs... and after a brief discussion on the relative merits of 'nandos' and a certain mister sheeran's tune of a similar name, and that mine came first and stevie is convinced he robbed it from me, it was my go...

opened with aforementioned poultry ballad... the reaction to which is always interesting in a new venue, before requesting some dance moves and dealing with the marmite...

the weather basically twisted my arm into playing sunny afternoon, fatbwoi filtered of course, it almost seems wrong not to... and perhaps the complete lack of sun explains why i haven't played it yet this year...

there was a spontaneous 1-800, which never featured on the lil' piece of paper... but i was going down well and i just couldn't help myself... forgot to consider the effects of stomping on a hot evening, and by the end 1x bwoi was damn hot!

always nice when you drop the fresh prince at the end of CYHMN and everyone sings along... it still amazes me to this day, just how many people know all the words to that particular ditty...

its like some kind of national guilty pleasure...

the closer was bullet, by request of mr jones... and who can deny a request like that?!

all-in a really good night... i had a lot of fun, and anywhere with red stripe on draught has automatically got itself a handful of bonus points... thank-you to the two stevies for having me over!

learnt an important lesson too... its probably best not to burst into spontaneous versions of "we're the anchor cows" when asked if this is the adverts... i'm not sure that pretending to be a doo-wop cow whilst standing there looking crazy-haired and sweaty doesn't affect your street cred...

good fun though 8)

Fatbwoi Live @ The O.U. 270412

word up you crazy cats!!! y'all good...

took to the stage with with the most-excellent 'monkey kettle' crew t'other night, at the OU in the sunny borough of milton keynes...

bit of a bumper set, which was running a bit late owing to some technical issues during the headliner's sound check... add that to the recently finished quiz next door, and the mission was to get everyone from one room to the next... lady linenwrecker did some fine work in this department (thankyou chica xxxx), as did the voice of the mysterons...

one sotto voce rendition of 'istanbul was constantinople' later, and we were ready to start the party...

it was a bumper set from me... opening with the chicken, jazz-hands and the faux brass section... it was like a triplet fire-punch to the crowd... there was dancing. it was fun...

it was a nice uncluttered stage area, so i even got to throw in a few crazy-legged dance-moves of my own without fear of destroying something valuable... which is always nice!

swung it up with a couple of covers, even dropped a bit of 'fresh prince' at the end of 'CYHMN' - which has had very few outings this year, it seemed to nuzzle nicely into its new mid-set spot... [this does however increase the importance of a post-CYHMN swig of something, as the whole extended chorus thing is a killer, and now there's much further to go...]

then it all got a bit stompy again... before a temporary reprieve for 'modern condition' - really enjoying playing that one at the moment, although i am fighting a bit of a urge to drop octave'd distortion onto the riff bits... 

closed with 'forces'... having been told that no-one in the room had ever woken up and felt like the fate of the world rested in their hands, which  frankly i don't believe for a second...

all-in, a top top night... there was dancing and merriment, and some new friends made...

oh, and did i mention that there was free cake?! you can't beat a bit of free cake...

and the provision of such, when coupled with the provision of free croissant too, made it possible to create a luxury pain au chocolat...

made even better by the removal of guilt for eating too much of the free cake, as a luxury pain au chocolat is only one cake...

NEXT GIG - 27/04/12 The O.U. Cellar Bar...

word up you crazy cats...

just a few short days till i shall be taking to the stage supporting 'the bitter suite' @ The O.U. cellar bar, in milton keynes... that's right not only can one get themselves a night of quality music... but its an SU bar too...

***of course, when i say cellar bar, what i actually mean is pavillion, a bit like it says on the poster below with the monkey... its is however comparably easy to find, being located on campus by the cricket pitch - something which is always in need of a pavillion (of sorts)... now back to the random wittering...***

SU, O.U. - that's a lot of u's...

its not the room where i went to my 6th form summer ball and declared ben the "best-dressed worst-dressed fashionista wannabe of the year 1997"... but it is just round the corner...

i shall be shaking that thang at about 19.30... i do believe its free/very-cheap in, so excuses not to come down and have a lil' boogie are obviously limited...

just a quick one to let you know about some new dates which have been added to the diary...

first up, i shall be playing at the Wildfire Sessions 1st Birthday Festival on 14th April... that's in kettering, and indoor festival with two stages to celebrate the first year of the wildfire sessions, there'll be over 30 acts and it should be a cracker...

also confirmed is foxton locks festival on 30th June... looking forward to this one as there's some quality musicians playing, and it looks like its going to be a great day out all-in - happy time...

word up you crazy cats!! how the devil is it going...?!

things are good one planet bwoi... a lil' crazy - but hey, we wouldn't have it any other way! there's been a couple of bursts of concentrated thang shakery in the last couple of days... and that always makes for happy time 8)

first up was some thang shakery on the hallowed boards of the broken amp...

also playing were Less For Murder, who opened the evenings proceedings with some dark melodic loveliness, a minor equipment malfunction, and some new material to boot... these are two cool cats (although i did think matt was considering battering the amp at one point!), but cool cats - trust me on this...

next up was the retinal circus, complete with pedals and crazy hat...

and then this one... with a request to hit the stage running, and a bit of caffeine in my system, i was easily ready for a bit of stompy goodness...

opened (perhaps controversially) with jazz hands, and kept the stompy vibe going straight into a 1-800/Love Once medley... always need a swig of something at this point...

really enjoyed playing hard... the middle eight on that is proper lovely pop, i may even have to extend it... the verse's are on the tongue-in-cheek nazty (yeah - with a z!) side - but that's how this cat rolls...

there was a bit of time for a burst of 'back in the day' (a lil' ATD/Ahmad inspired 'cover'), wherein the bwoi done rap about growing up in the MK, roundabouts and the like...

before closing on the one about the chicken...

it was beautiful hearing voices around the room joining in with the faux-french intro...

you gotta love that sh!t

it was a bit of a condensed set, hi-speed like they want the rail links, and not completely dissimilar to that double strength squash you get... but as any reader of this (generally quite random) blog will know...

it's all about the cherries and berries!!

word up you crazy cats!! how's it goin'...?!? all good i hope...

it was proper nice taking to the stage last night for my first gig of the year (and for a while too...) to shake some thang, and open up for the most-awesome magic tombolinos...

and that's not just because the stage is carpeted... (but whilst on the subject, it is a damn nice carpeted stage!!)

it was just nice to shake a lil' dust off the ole' dance moves, grease up the limbs, and play some musics... and i think all-in it went down pretty darn well...

as opening act, my set was quite compact... but i opened with the chicken, before going on to highlight my multi-lingual abilities by counting to six in german (and doing an impression of that bloke in fear factory)...

bullet was well received, i think everyone was happy that (it being january) they didn't have to see me prancing around in the cape... it being january, i wouldn't want to be prancing round in the cape!!

it is a proven fact that leicester is unprepared in-case of zombie apocalypse, and there for it was my preordained civic duty to play Land of the Dead... one day, that song could save your life!!

all-in, a really good night... i really enjoyed it!! and the magic tombolinos were proper jazzed out and awesome... 

big love too, to the crazy cats who came out to shake some thang - made my night!!

word-up ye crazy cats! how the devil's is it goin' with you?!

things are, as ever a bit mental on planet bwoi at the minute (although i should state for the record that there are of course different definitions of mental, and it hasn't quite got "don't blame me, blame the ice-cream" levels yet...)

bur the mental never gets in the way of the thang-shakery (although it has been said that the two walk hand in hand) and as such i did step out last week to wiggle it (just a lil' bit) at 'The Boston Tea Party' as part of Worcester Music Festival 2011!!

and i must confess to having had a most-excellent time...

car/parking-related shenanigans meant that i didn't get to catch those crazy less for murder cats whilst they were playing, but it was nice to sit and have a lil' chinwag in the chippy before my set/mooching back up to the venue...

(there was truly supreme toy-shop window en route too... i cannot tell you what was in it for fear of appearing more of a geek than i do now - but rest assured, it was cool)

the venue was top... it had an aeroplane stuck the ceiling, some properly yummy looking cake-age... like, uhm,... props and everything!!

opened with some chicken, lil' bit of tv evangelism, and had just got into discussing the whole running naked around the woods being chased by a bear thing, when the legend that is I've Been Dean (avec entourage) appeared at the door in his glowing daz white jeans...

from there on in, it got a lil' kooky... 8)

we had a bit of a party atmos going on... so the set list got a bit free and easy at the end! i felt bad because i had to deny a request for 'house of corpses' (its been too long since i played it, but i'll slip in sometime soon), but less bad at denying of for the song about the woman with a habit...

instead we settled for a quick burst of the krshna song... proximity to the godhead re-established, we got on with the party...

then in honour of the post-modern one (i.b.dean) i did me a lil' book-ending and closed with an exuberant burst of nandos...

went down a treat...

i even had a portugese dude telling me how his dad makes the best piri piri ever, i asked him to send me the recipe but i get the impression that it may be a 'family' secret, in which case i've asked if he can just send his dad...

no reply on that so far...

all in it was a really good night, met some top new people and got to touch base with some top older friends AND got to shake that thang...

what more can a bwoi ask for?!

(took me friggin' ages to find the car though...)

word up y'all...

done did play me a lil' set on saturday night, downstairs at the sunflower lounge in central birmingham, where the air is hot and humid, and there is an interesting array of scaffolding and fairy lights...

although i think the more appropriate architectural term would probably be someting like 'feature'...

if ya wore it on your head, it'd definitely be a fascinator...

the occasion?! G (of mighty boomshadow fame)'s nth birthday, or 'living wake' as he preferable to call it... and i for one cannot think of a better reason for a bit of celebration...

G opened the evening's entertainment with a solo set, quality tunage delivered on his stratacoustic... and i haven't seen the big G t-shirt before, but i like it... i noticed that there were no covers in my man's set, but put it down to the shorter-sets-to-wedge-in-as-much-entertainment-as-possible nature of the night...

next up was the man-god dale perry, with a short solo set... haven't seen the man d play for a while, and i really enjoyed his set. i could still here some of the dub-no basslines i applied when i stood in on the four-string for 'I Am Locutus' at 2009's Worcester Music Festival... they probably didn't need that much dub at the time... but you can't stop a bwoi in full flow... 8)

g returned to the stage, backed by two guitars, a bass, and the living legend that is paul carroll on the skins... then delivered a supreme collection of (mostly) who covers... it was nice to see g letting his hair down, and busting some move sans guitar, and the PC groove machine in full effect is a truly excellent sight to behold, and i defy anybody not to shake their thang to his infectious rhythmic stylings...

and then i...

my man laurence (1k that's his name) welcomed me on with a properly heart-warming intro (thanks dude!!), and i was fully ready to 'do it to it'...

i played my set by request, it being G's birthday after-all!! this meant the order was a bit odd but all the goodies were there... opened with a jazz hands (my choice), and then deferred to the birthday boy...

there was some CYHMN, a bit of the kinks, and an ultra-rare outing for the tune that is 'crack whore'... (i think i've actually played that more times since christmas than in the two years previous... maybe i should write an extra verse or something, its still a big dumb bludgeoning riff, and my favourite bit has to the 'crack rocks' section) - i reckon its probably safe to put it back on the shelf for a bit...

finished with the chicken one, in duet format (with the G), and a fat pile of crowd participation right about there... and left the stage having (by request) over run my 30mins slot, covered in sweat and barely able to talk... you gotta love it!!

(the mighty) Boomshadow took to the stage to close the night's proceedings, and from the bit of their set that i saw, they were on blistering form... it was nice to see all four of them onstage (for the first time this year i think), 2011 mBS have reworked some of their stuff jus' a lil' and were really good... they're playing at the bandstand in bearwood soon (i'll try and find a link), and are always definitely worth a look-see if you haven't already...

had to make a slightly early break for the wild, to avoid the wheels being impounded... the normally safe island bar car park having been turned into a(n) (admittedly cheap) pay and display car park... with nasty warnings about tickets, documents and letters - boo.

all in, had me a really good night, especially nice to see 1k, PC, PH, dale, sam, and of course the G... (thanks for inviting me dude!)

i love his new shirt!

me next one is at worcester music festival (20th August)... and the thang is already primed and ready to go... 'sgonna be like a super-coiled spring by the time we get there...

how's it all goin...?! all good i hope...

yesterday was the second day of the cross keys beer and music festival... and therefore time for this one to swoop in and do some thang shakin'...

started my set a lil' early as the highly variable weather meant that there was a captive audience... mk was having a gorgeous sunshine/heavy 'matrix' rain split personality kinda day, although scrolling green code and keanu reeves were sadly missing...

opened with the chicken and the god before declaring that the walkway to the exit was now a 'dance-walkway', then executing a neat swing left into the one with the metallica...

martian desert-trek bwoi...

it was round about this time that i noticed the growing ranks of the under 10's army, who were not only showing the adults how the whole 'dance-walkway' thing should be done, but properly havin' it large...

the party was definitely over there, and then there... and then there... some of them were proper whizzing around... this took a bit of esp and lifting of the guitar to ensure no-accidents. the remainder of the u10's army was putting my dance moves to shame... there was some proper funky bogling going on...

dropped the sun-inducing 'Mr E's Beautiful Blues' which gave me an opportunity to whiz into 'Missing'... haven't played that in a while (but it went alright)...

the under 10 army assembles...

did get a bit confused on the exact order of the lyrics in sunny afternoon (for a shocker)... but the people in the audience singing along most-graciously helped me out...

all-in it was a top gig, there was a nice party-vibe to the place (a whole range of fantastic beers on sale) and it was really cool to see the kids 'getting down'...

did get me thinking about extending the fatbwoi army, creating an under 10's division, who when teamed up with fatbwoi gerbil army (the sweetest smelling army in the world) counterparts, would create most-excellent cells around the country ready for world domination...

or something similar (and amusing)

here-in lies the execution of my civic duty, the passing on of my proposed where-abouts so that you are given adequate notice to vacate the locality (the government has deemed that its for your own good... and they're right about everything right?!)...

its all about the beer this month... well actually its not, its almost always about the lemonade, but we shall continue... its about the beer because i am playing not one, but two beer festivals on the same weekend...

ja, for sure, and *shock horror* ladies and gentlemen... yup, it would appear that i have actually written three music-related posts in a row!!! cue collapse of world economies and world-wide launch of demented computer virus... like y2k - but bigger

...do i get a goldfish?! probably not... but that does remind me of a recent trip to stourport where i was amazed to see a darts game on the fair where the prize actually was a goldfish (in a bag)... you could of course buy yourself a lil' goldfish bowl of the same stall, for a prize, which struck me as a lil' unsporting...

surely you could make the bowl the prize on the slightly harder machine-gun game next door... and if you only wanted the bowl not a goldfish... well, job's a good 'un...

but the music (yes always with the music and NEVER with the lasers... obviously)...

went down the a14 last night to shake some thang at the old market inn, kettering... and i done did have a me a most-excellent time...

opened with... well a technical hitch, as the white lead decided it was no longer for this world... so actually opened with 8bars of beat-boxin', as you do... and then the one with the chicken...

then the bwoi done did drop a slice of metallica... its always cool if, whilst explaining its (complete non-) relation to the original if i can persuade a couple of people to hum the original bassline to themselves... its a short and sweet one - and i do enjoy playing it....

stevie caught a lil' vid of jazz hands... i noticed that i actually missed a 'jazz hands' there, so if anyone was playing along... i'm sorry, i left you hanging for a while there...

all-in it was a top night, proper enjoyed it... thanks to stevie for inviting me to play...

that's two stops down the a14 in the past week... one at j3, the other at j7... was talking to the big O on the funk-telefon earlier, and we came to the conclusion that i should arrange an a14 tour... see if i can get all the way to felixstowe?! gotta be good for a giggle right?! and the tour t-shirt can ripped straight from the a-z...

i reckon its probably rooted in that infamous 'dropping' incident, when the fate of the world rested in my hands... i still maintain that was not my fault... but sometimes you just can't argue with the media...

or at least that's what he wanted her to believe, for at that precise moment a plan had been hatched, a plan so fiendish that it cannot be disclosed for it would sear the digital page onto which it was written...

a lil' last minute, but got the chance to lay down some tunes at the cross keys, in good ole' concrete-cow land on saturday... the bwoi, the hometown, and a pub with red stripe (and also nice lemonade) on tap - happy time

as an aside, you'd think that the quality of lemonade would be fairly consistent between drinking establishments... yeah right. trust me, when the clear bubbly business is the first drink you always head for, you get pretty good at judging these things... and some pubs can really f**k it up! not gonna name name's, but i do believe one special exception to that rule must be the lemonade i had at the meadow lark during the england/wales qualifier a couple of weeks ago... looked like misty soap and sediment filled tap water, tasted weird to odd...

verdict - worth going there just to buy one and look at it (food always smells nice... but then they have managed to balls up lemonade, so make of that what you will...)

anywho, saturday... there was some definite shaking of the thang, and i had me a most-excellent time...

there was some stuff about chicken, even the one about god (well tv evangelist's and their personalised interpretation of god, but you know what i mean...), zombie apocalypse survival lessons, but was struck me as a bit weird was playing 'back in the day'...

i've noticed, as my gigs have moved closer to home, that people start to recognise 'the sights' listed in the lyrics, and playing it in milton keynes, everybody knows what i'm talking about... they know what the h's and v's are (it was a bit weird for me having driven on them that very day), and have almost certainly seen a concrete cow (i believe mk currently has two sets?!?!)

and i got to wondering, would i have written the song the same if i still lived 'dahrn sarf'?! cos i probably wouldn't have written a dudley song whilst living in dudley...

either way b.i.t.d seemed to go down quite well, as did the rest of the set... and i got to test the bar staff's skill at mixing red stripe and lemonade... verdict - pass 8)

all in, a lot of fun... thanks to stevie for letting me play, will just have to see what kind mischief i can get up to next time...

init jus'... for real

had me one of those multi-instrumentalist moments last night... right on.

got me invited to play at Jess's 30th bash last night (Happy Birthday Jess) by the e'er ineffable G (of mighty boomshadow/boombwoi fame)... and after our duo outing, for my birthday, on monday night we decided to drop another one of those 'once in a life'-ers again...

Omar played (really enjoyed that as i haven't seen my man play for some time... the big O is just too cool for so many things) ...and you gotta love that open shirt look 8)

[so cool is he that we even managed to drop an impromptu locomotion... which both a: made someone very happy b: taught us that we must never do this again, it is sealed with a kiss or nothing!! uhm...?!]

G played, and quite possibly scared of the dude from the scouts by opening with beastiality (billy bragg and phil jupitus)... and even whipped out his solo YMCA

i played, held off the nandos til the end of the set (damn weird feelin' that)... then G joined me for some nandos with a bullet on a sunny afternoon - although tbh drunk G had made an appearance by now, and there was some seriously enjoyable arms-outstrectched theatrics...

and then i did strap on a bass to join G and PC, and our powers combined...

take 50% mighty boomshadow add a smidgen of fatbwoi on the bass, don't rehearse and just drop it like its hot (drop it like its hot)... and that is how we roll!!

can't actually remember the last time i played bass with a band, and i had a most enjoyable time 8) (even when G went off on a mad solo during a song i didn't know/hadn't played and had to try and guess the key off - this is how we roll mo-fo!!).

really diggin' some of the incidental stuff PC and i were up to... bit of jazz, don't mind if i do, more a case of this is our thang, thus we must work it, doin' a bit of the ole' link-up shizzle - of course my horse 8)

properly enjoyed it though, nice addin' a bit of jazznofunknoswingnotechno bass to the mBs material... but then you gotta love the bass in general...
